Humans face lots of trouble in their life. Some people
grip in severe mental syndrome while others have some physical deformities. In
their troubling period, counsellors are first and best healers. People who
suffer from disabilities, whether physical or emotional, frequently need a

Rehabilitation
counselling has been elaborated as an effective technique in which the

People with disabilities may be elderly group, who have
problems adjusting to new health limitations, or who are generally healthy but

The main objective of rehabilitation counselling is to
assist people to overcome these barriers, evaluating capabilities and needs,
setting goals, and helping them to overcome physical, social, and emotional
difficulties. Rehabilitation counselling includes all types of disabling
situation such as behavioral and emotional disabilities, disabilities caused by
war, and others resulting from conditions such as muscular dystrophy, cerebral
palsy, and Down syndrome.
Rehabilitation counsellors must be well adept to help
patients in adapting to the environment, assist environments in accommodating
the needs of the individual, and work toward the full participation of
individuals in all aspects of society, with a particular focus on independent
living and work.
In rehabilitation counselling, there are array of
treatments, from evaluation, to in-hospital therapy, out-patient treatment, and
establishing processes and supports for living independently. In some cases,
rehabilitation counselling has been extended to a week or months. For typical
patients, the process of rehabilitation counselling continues for several
years. It depends on the person’s mental or physical disabilities.
In rehabilitation counselling, procedure starts with a
series of consultations with counsellor. Interviews are conducted with the disabled
individual, and with his or her family. Rehabilitation counsellors thoroughly
evaluate medical reports, school reports, and psychometric test results of
patient. Consultations are also held with the patient’s psychologist,
physicians, and other therapists who have been, or will need to be, involved.
This comprises of occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech
therapists, depending on the condition.
Rehabilitation counsellors must possess numerous skills
and must be knowledgeable to deal with patients. These knowledge and skill
include career counseling, assessment and consultation; counselling theories,
techniques, and applications; rehabilitation services and resources; case and
caseload management; healthcare and disability systems; and medical,
functional, and environmental implications of disability. Rehabilitation
counselling is conducted in various settings as the process of rehabilitation
progresses. Some counsellors specialize in certain settings, such as inpatient
care or home-based care. However, the counselling process is done in a hospital
or other clinical setting.
In handling disable patients, rehabilitation counsellors
must be dedicated and explore ways to help their clients. They must be
sensitive and sympathetic when tackling with traumatized and disturbed people.
Counsellors must have effective communication skill to understand the patient’s
problem and offer therapy accordingly. They must develop problem solving skills
to explore good solution of barriers. Job of counsellor require good leadership
such as willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
They must display cooperative behaviour with others and show a good-natured,
cooperative attitude. Additionally counsellor must have good control of emotion
in counselling sessions, effectively deal in high stress situations.
To encapsulate the significance of rehabilitation
counselling, it has been well appraised that for conducting the counselling
program, professionals need to possess high level of skills and deep knowledge.
Rehabilitation counsellors basically help people with disabilities and enable
them to live more productive, sovereign lives.
