Benefits of Pre-implantation Genetic Screening

We are observing tremendous advancement in the field of medical genetics. The application of genetic technologies to the arena of reproductive medicine has steered in a new epoch of treatment. Pre-implantation Genetic diagnosis is considered as an alternative to prenatal diagnosis.  Pre-implantation Genetic Screening is a type of genetic test design to enhance the success of IVF. Preimplantation genetic screening, abbreviated as PGS is the process of determining the presence of aneuploidy in a developing embryo. Preimplantation genetic screening is conducted on embryos produced through IVF. In PGS, a biopsy is taken either from the polar body of a mature oocyte or from cells taken from developing embryos and genetically analysing the composition of these cells.

This screening provide valuable information about genetic health of embryo which help embryologist to select the best embryo for transfer and improve chance of a successful pregnancy.

Pre-implantation Genetic Screening is best suited for women undergoing IVF. All females are in danger zone of producing chromosomally abnormal embryos. With age, the potential for chromosomally abnormal embryos considerably increases. Therefore Pre-implantation Genetic Screening helps in positive end of pregnancy. PGS gives information for several disorders such as Down syndrome or Turner syndrome which develop due to an abnormal number of chromosomes in certain positions.

Pre-implantation Genetic Screening is mainly referred to older females who are more likely to have eggs with the wrong number of chromosomes. Abnormal chromosomes are major cause for older women facing difficulties in conceiving and there are more chances of miscarriage or a baby with Down’s syndrome.

Major advantages of performing Pre-implantation Genetic Screening are higher chance of pregnancy, lessening risk of miscarriage, confidence in transferring a single embryo, evading health risks related with twin or triplet pregnancies and reduced number of IVF cycles required to achieve pregnancy.

Some genetic experts argued that PGS sometimes is an inaccurate diagnostic procedure for embryos. Though it is outstanding tool for reproductive endocrinologists to increase IVF efficiency, but Preimplantation genetic screening is not faultless in its diagnostic precision. This chance of misdiagnosis results from both biological and technical limitation.
