How dangerous is sudden loss of vision


If a person experiences sudden loss of sight, it is a warning signal of serious medical condition. They need to visit general practitioner at the earliest. Temporary loss of vision in one or both eye should not be taken lightly. There may not be problem in the eye, but this medical condition can emerge due to ailment of the heart, circulatory system, or nervous system. Head injuries and other diseases may directly impact on the blood supply, nerves, and tissues of the eyes. Temporary blindness in one or both eyes is also denoted as transient loss of vision, eye stroke, or amaurosis fugax. Amaurosis fugax can occur from different causes. One cause is when a blood clot or a piece of plaque blocks an artery in the eye. The blood clot or plaque frequently travels from a larger artery, such as the carotid artery in the neck or an artery in the heart, to an artery in the eye.



Symptoms:

A sudden loss of vision must not be considered as total blindness. It can occur in one eye or both eyes, and the loss of sight can be temporary or total. Sudden vision loss can include a sudden loss of peripheral vision, sudden loss of central vision, or even a sudden blurring of vision. The sudden appearance of spots within field of vision is also a symptom of a severe condition. Sudden blindness may only last a short time, such as a few seconds, minutes or hours. Nevertheless, if treatment is not given instantly, it could potentially be permanent.


Causes of sudden loss of vision are numerous. Any damage to retina, such as a detached retina or artery occlusion may be cause of sudden blindness. The macula is the central focusing area of the retina at the back of eye. When a macular problem occurs, it results in loss of central vision, while peripheral or ‘side’ vision remains.

Sudden loss of vision may also occur due to vitreous haemorrhage.
Some eye conditions can cause blood to leak into the vitreous ‘gel’ within the eye. In such situation, there is blockage of the light which enters the eye and results in sudden blurred vision.

Some serious medical conditions can also cause sudden blindness, such as a stroke or brain tumour.

Treatment:

If person experience any sudden loss of vision, they must visit to an eye specialist immediately. Doctor can thoroughly check and provide treatment accordingly.
