Emotional mood during pregnancy




Pregnancy is stage in woman’s life that can be exciting as well as challenging. Some women are more stressful during this period and find it difficult to cope up. Therefore they exhibit myriad of emotions.

It is generally observed that mood swings during pregnancy. Major causes of emotional expression are hormonal changes that affect the levels of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) and females have range of passionate feelings to become a parent. There are individual differences to responds changes during pregnancy. Some women may show intensified emotions, others may experience feeling depression or nervousness.

It is also documented in psychological studies that females during pregnancy period are susceptible to mood and anxiety disorders. They are at high risk of depression. Depressive symptoms like fatigue and changes in sleep and appetite that is experienced by pregnant women can be difficult to distinguish from the normative experiences of pregnancy. There are numerous factors that trigger depression during pregnancy such as:

History of depression

Young age

Limited social support

Living in nuclear family or have greater number of children

Unhappy marital life

Uncertainty about the pregnancy.

It is well established in mushrooming studies that pregnant women often complain that their emotions are ‘up and down’. It is very common at this stage. But if women show vicious or extreme emotions then it is a pointer of a serious physical or psychological problem during pregnancy.

Following are the common emotions expressed by pregnant women:

-Ecstasy: Women when hear the news of confirmed pregnancy may be full of joyous feeling.  They are happy even if experiencing some discomfort in early phase of pregnancy.

-Annoyance: Another major emotions revealed by pregnant women is anger. This may due to drastic hormonal changes which may result in feeling insecurity.

-Fear is most common emotion during pregnancy. Pregnant women are fearful about growing baby, his/her health. It is also observed that some female have fear of death during child birds. These situation must be handles cautiously with the help of health counsellor or doctor.

-Another negative emotional feeling emerge during pregnancy is sadness. Sometimes due to complication in pregnancy cause women to become sad. Their plans do not go well about bay care. Therefore they often feel miserable.


To wrap up, there is immense importance of smooth growth in prenatal period. Pregnancy is highly critical phase in life of women and they experience different emotional feelings. Maternal stress during pregnancy augment the jeopardy of the chances altered neurodevelopmental consequences of child. It is observed that in prenatal period, a woman's tempers and emotions drastically change from feeling of jubilant and enthusiastic about new baby arrival to feeling irritation, anxious and frightened for the painful delivery and motherhood attitudes.
