Benefits of afternoon napping



Napping has certain advantages for human health such as relaxation, reduced fatigue, increased alertness, enhanced mood, improved performance, and better memory. But if a person sleep in daytime in wrong hours, it may be harmful to his/her health. Napping may have some negative health impact such as Sleep inertia and night-time sleep problems.


People may consider nap when they experience new fatigue or unexpected sleepiness and want to make planned naps as part of their daily routine.

There are some effective ways to take nap. It is recommended to keep naps short around 10-30 minutes. Afternoon nap is good for healthy and energetic body. It is suggested to take naps in the afternoon. The best time for a nap is usually mid-afternoon, around 2 or 3 p.m. people normally feel sleepiness in post lunch time.

An important point to take afternoon nap is that naps taken during this time do not interfere with night-time sleep. Plethora of research reports revealed that naps, when done proper way, can help balance hormones naturally and decrease sleepiness overall. Nap may also improve cognitive performance for a longer period of time. Group of medical studies have shown that people who take naps regularly on average had lesser coronary death as compared to those who do not nap. This is another major advantage of taking nap.

Mushrooming medical researchers have demonstrated that napping is also helpful in reducing stress and anxiety.

To get comforts and ease, it is advised to take nap in a quiet, dark place with a relaxed room temperature and few interruptions.


It is well established from burgeoning researches in medical science that afternoon napping augment cognitive functions as well as physical performance of humans. It is imperative that people must make a habit of regular nap in afternoon to live energetic and high quality life.
