Early dental implant failure may be due to Autoimmune Diseases. These include Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Multiple sclerosis, Type 1 diabetes and Celiac disease. Poor Blood Supply can cause dental implant rejection. Poor blood supply could be from a blood disease, a blood clot elsewhere in the body.

Any infection in body or in mouth can abolish an implant to successfully integrate. General infection is peri-implantitis, a type of gum disease. Failure of dental implant may be due to immediate overloading procedure. In normal course, implant procedure is completed it in two stages: insertion of the implant and the placing of the abutment and crown. The time in between these two stages allows the implant to fuse to the jawbone before placing the abutment and crown. But overloading will result in rejection of implant.

Sometimes, human body rejects foreign material as in the case of any organ implant. Then the result in failed dental implant.  Allergy is also major cause of dental implant failure. Usually implant material is made up of titanium alloy. Human body rejects this due to allergic reaction and patients may complaint tingling or burning sensation that spread from the area to the cheek, tongue, chin, and lips.

Difficulty chewing and biting

In long term dental failure, it is recognized that under-engineered procedure is performed. It means less implants are done to replace the teeth. This results in excessive stress on implant. Other reason for long term dental failure is smoking. Bruxism is also leading cause of implant failure. It repetitive teeth grinding or clenching can make it difficult for an implant to integrate with the jaw bone because extreme pressure on the teeth and implant and hurt the process clenching. One common reason for implant failure is Poor Oral Hygiene. If Patients don’t have sufficient bone to support an implant, there are chances of long-term failure.

Additionally, an implant may be unsuccessful because of overheating of the bone at the time of implant placement, contamination of the implant surface, or systematic problems interfering with osseointegration.

To summarize, dental implant are effective solution for replacing missing teeth but these procedure may be failed if inexperienced dental surgeon performs the procedure. Other main causes are infection, poor oral hygiene, allergy, and body rejection of foreign material, failure to integrate, and implant fracture.
