Causes and risk factors for developing Erotomania disorder
Erotomania is a mental
health syndrome in which patient develops a belief that other individual is
attracted towards him or her. It is a rare category of paranoid delusion. This
delusion persists even though opposite side person has no feeling about
sufferer. Psychological reports revealed that erotomania immensely affect
females as compared to males.
Erotomania begins unexpectedly and it continues for
longer period. It is a psychiatrist ailment and one of the symptoms of critical
psychological diseases like schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, and major
depressive disorder with psychotic features, bipolar disorder, or Alzheimer's
disease. Key symptom of this disorder is that patient develops false belief of
deep love about other person. In erotomania, person tries to make contact
through stalking, written communication, and exhibits other harassing
behaviours. Person continually sending letters, emails, or gifts to the other
individual. He/she makes phone calls constantly. These people also pose threat
to object of love.
Erotomania may occur over a long period of time or in
short episodes called psychotic breaks. Psychotic breaks involve a sudden
deteriorating of delusions. Patient in such conditions are unable to sleep
properly, involve in huge activities, having lots of thoughts, speak on range
of topics, have unusual amount of energy and may show risky behaviours like
rash driving. Erotomania is sometimes linked with bipolar disorder.
According to case reports, erotomania is often triggered
by social media networks. Other psychological reports have shown that
erotomania is developed to manage severe stress in person. Psychologists also
indicated genetic basis for developing erotomania.
The diagnosis of erotomania is quite difficult for
psychiatrist as it is an uncommon mental disorder. In similar way, treatment is
also not available for erotomania. In order to manage this syndrome,
psychiatrists must focus on treating the primary disorder and give medications,
therapy, and hospitalization. Appropriate therapy will aid the sufferer to
comply with an agreed treatment plan and to educate them about their disorder.
In our surrounding, we hear many cases of such impulsive
love. These symptoms may be highly risky for other individual. Therefore if any
individual display symptoms of Erotomania, he/she must visit psychiatrist for
immediate help. It will be beneficial to arrest the symptoms at early stage
before showing risky or aggressive behaviour towards another person.
It can be interpreted that Erotomania is rare syndrome.
Individual under such condition think that he/she falls in love with other.
There is no treatment for this unusual disorder and only behaviour therapies
and some medications can lessen the impact of this disorder.
