Different types of broken teeth:


-      Craze lines: These are small cracks that only affect the outer enamel. Craze lines are common for adults. They are shallow and cause no pain.

-      Fractured cusp: When a piece of a tooth breaks in chewing surface, it is known as fractured cusp. But it does not trigger much pain.

-      Cracked tooth: A cracked tooth means a crack extends from the chewing surface vertically toward the root. In this condition, patient must visit doctor to get diagnosis to retain the tooth. If a cracked tooth left untreated, it will get worse as time goes by and can result in loss of the tooth.

-      Split tooth: A split tooth is basically the outcome of a long-term cracked tooth. It is identified by a crack with distinct segments that can be separated. A split tooth cannot be saved intact.

-      Vertical root fracture:  These cracks begin in the root of the tooth and extend toward the chewing surface. Often, they exhibit minimal signs and symptoms. Many times, they are exposed when the nearby bone and gum become infected.

-      Dental bonding: Composite bonding is an effective procedure to restore chipped, cracked, decayed, discoloured, and gapped teeth. Composite bonding can last up to 10 years.

To bond a tooth, the dentist first engraves its surface with a liquid or gel to roughen it and make the bonding material adhere to it. Then, the dentist applies an adhesive material to the tooth followed by a tooth coloured resin. After shaping the bonding material to look like a natural tooth, the dentist uses an ultraviolet light to harden the material.

 

-      Veneers: Veneers are covers for a tooth. If a front tooth is broken or chipped, a dental veneer is applied to look teeth whole and healthy again. A dental veneer is a thin shell of tooth-coloured porcelain or resin composite material that covers the whole front of the tooth with a thicker section to replace the broken part of the tooth.
       
       



-      Crowns: If tooth is fragmented severely or patients are complaining pain when chewing or drinking, doctors usually recommend a crown. Crowns are one of the most common restorative treatments.

A crown is a cap that covers the tooth and protects in and enhance the appearance. It acts as a strong covering for tooth. When patient gets a crown, it prevents from loss of tooth.



-      Dental Implant: If there is a crack in tooth that extends below the gum line, your tooth is no longer treatable, and cannot be saved. Patient will need a tooth extraction and then dentists advise for a dental implant to replace natural tooth.
