Genetic testing is a kind of medical that detects variations in genes, proteins and chromosomes. The results will display whether persons have a genetic disorder, are at risk for developing one or passing it on.



Genetic tests fare used for several reasons. These include

Genetic tests are performed by taking samples of saliva, blood, hair, skin or tissue.

The three methods of genetic tests are molecular, chromosomal and biochemical. Molecular genetic tests (or gene tests) study single genes or short lengths of DNA to identify variations or mutations that lead to a genetic disorder.

Chromosomal genetic tests investigate whole chromosomes or long lengths of DNA to see if there are large genetic changes, such as an extra copy of a chromosome, that cause a genetic condition.

Biochemical genetic tests examine the amount or activity level of proteins; abnormalities in either can indicate changes to the DNA that result in a genetic disorder.


Advantages of Genetic Testing: Through genetic testing, doctors can diagnose diseases and provide prevention tips and multiple treatment options to patients. A negative result can give immediate relief from fear and uncertainty. Some results help persons decide about having children and can prevent real sorrow. New-born testing can catch lifelong genetic disorders early so prevention and treatment can be started instantly.

With great positive outcome of perfuming genetic testing for diagnosing, treating and preventing illness, there are some drawbacks also. Suppose, a healthy person, if genetic test gives a positive result, it does not indicate that he/she will develop a disease. On the other hand, in some situations, a negative result does not guarantee that patient will have a specific disorder.
