Emotionally sensitive
adolescents are major challenge for counsellors or mental health professionals.
These teens are hard to teach, to live with, or to counsel. Recently, the rate
of overly sensitive adolescent appears to be snowballing. It is the need of the
hour to address the pertinent issues, causes, symptoms and basic counselling techniques
to manage emotionally sensitive adolescents. These teenagers come across
several problems in changeable situations such as in school, home, at sport
ground, and at different level. These teens always seek assistance of teacher,
and want to get parental attention.
There is need to
comprehend the behaviour of emotionally sensitive adolescents. These adolescent
have tendency to withdraw, characterized by shy and inhibited. It has been
observed by counsellors that some of teens supress their feelings and do not
express their melancholy state. In other words, they do not know the way to
express their feelings and emotional issues. Generally they have low self-esteem.
In simple queries, they respond negatively. If these tendencies persist and remains
unattended then it may lead to depression. They blame themselves for any wrong
thing happens and develops poor peer interaction.
Major causes of
developing emotionally sensitive adolescents are dysfunctional family where
there is a lack of nurture and love. Alcoholic parents often termed as toxic
parents by Susan Forward (1989) are more responsible for emotionally sensitive
behaviour of their kids. It has been extensively seen that parents have great
expectations from their child which they did not fulfil due to limited
intellectual capacity. This results in development of emotional sensitive
teens. In our surroundings, we often observe that some teens are emotionally,
physically, sexually abused and neglected. This can be leading cause of showing
emotionally sensitive behaviour.
It is the
responsibility of parents to consult a professional mental health specialist if
they observe tendencies of emotional behaviour in their adolescent child. As a
parents, they must be supportive, caring and carefully comparing their child
with other. They should create soothing environment and avoid criticism. They
must allow their children to have his/her privacy and respect their limits.
Teacher’s assistance is vital in enhancing the living of emotionally sensitive
child. Major tool of teacher is patience to deal with such adolescents.
Student Counsellors can help these teens in miraculous ways. They must
extend their support to emotionally sensitive adolescent to boost the self
confidence and self-esteem. Counsellors need to develop a nonthreatening,
non-judgmental relationship with the adolescent. In counselling sessions,
counsellors must attentively listen the past traumatic events. Counsellor must focus on the positive
traits of emotionally sensitive child such as insightfulness, tender, caring, empathic
and compassionate to others. Counsellor
must have ability to comprehend the nonverbal expressions of adolescent. A good
counsellor can train adolescents or teach them the coping skills in a
compassionate manner.
Landing on the final
destination, emotionally sensitive adolescents need great mental care, support
from parents, teachers and professional counsellors to cope up with emerging
academic or personal issues. Counsellors
have daunting task to manage these adolescents as they have very low
self-esteem, vulnerable to insecurity and undergoing intense period of physical
and psychological growth. Highly professional counsellor can best understand
the emotional outbursts and they can fruitfully talk about issues of adolescent
to lessen the problems and augment their living.
