Causes and remedies of numbness in legs and feet


It is observed that people with nerve issues may experience numbness in their body. Long-lasting or baffling numbness may indicate some underlying medical ailment.


There are multiple causes of numbness in legs and feet.

Posture: A person may feel numbness if posture is not proper as it puts too much pressure on the nerves or reduces blood flow. Some Postural habits that put pressure on nerves or reduce blood flow in the lower limbs can cause temporary numbness in the legs and feet.

Poor habits that lead to numbness are crossing the legs for too long, sitting or kneeling for long periods, sitting on the feet, wearing tight pants, socks, or shoes.

Injuries to the torso, spine, hips, legs, ankles, and feet can put pressure on nerves and lead to the numbness in feet and legs.

Diabetes also cause nerve damage, called diabetic neuropathy.

Person may also feel numbness in legs and feet when there is some problems in the lower back, such as a breakdown or herniation of spinal discs as it cause compression of the nerves going to the legs. Sciatica is a medical condition which causes irritation of the sciatic nerve, runs from the lower back to the legs. If this nerve becomes irritated or compressed, a person may feel numbness or tingling in their legs or feet.

Person who suffer from Tarsal tunnel syndrome in which a nerve that runs down the back of the leg and along the inside of the ankle and into the foot is compressed, squeezed, or damaged.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is also the cause of leg numbness. In this medical condition, the peripheral blood arteries in the legs, arms, and stomach reduce the amount of blood they can pump and as a result decreasing blood flow.

Other medical ailment like tumours, cysts, abscesses, and benign (non-cancerous) growths can put pressure on the brain, spinal cord, or any part of the legs and feet. This pressure can hamper blood flow to the legs and feet, and leads to numbness.

Alcohol is also the reason for damaging nerve that is associated with numbness, especially in the feet.

Person must seek emergency medical care if numbness is accompanied by weakness or paralysis, confusion, difficulty in talking, dizziness, and sudden severe headache.

In the bottom line, numbness or pins and needles is a serious medical condition in which person cannot feel in affected body parts. Most numbness sensation is caused due to pressure on nerves or blood vessels. It is important to visit doctor to know the primary cause and get early treatment to avoid any severe complication.
