Awareness of Robotic Surgery for medical solution of critical diseases
In technically savvy
environment, medical field has made revolutionary progression which facilitated
medical researchers, doctors and other intellectuals to offer their services to
client and give best treatment with ease and simplified way. One of the
dominant technique for surgical operation of numerous critical diseases is robotic
surgery. Robot is a mechanical device that can be programmed to carry out
instructions and perform complicated tasks normally done by individuals in
their daily life.
Robotic surgery is a technique
to perform surgery using very small tools attached to a robotic arm. The specialist
controls the robotic arm with a computer. Surgical robotics is a novel
technology that has positive outcome and patients may get successful treatment
without extended stay in hospital. Historical data revealed that the first
surgical application of robot technique was used to guide a needle for brain
biopsy with 0.05mm accuracy. In 1987 robotics was used in the first
Laparoscopic surgery, a cholescystecotomy. In 1988, The PROBOT, developed at
Imperial College London, was used to perform prostatic surgery.
In 1992, the robodoc
was introduced for use in hip replacement surgery in coring out the femoral
shaft to accept the hip replacement prosthesis. In clinical trial, robodoc has
been found to have greater accuracy as compared to conventional technique. It
has been used in more than 50000 human hip replacement procedures in Europe. At
that time, it gained wider acceptance.
Robotic surgery is
often signalled as the new uprising, and it is a key topic of dialogue in
surgical arena among medical researchers, surgeons or doctors. Prime objective
of choosing robots in medicine is to provide enhanced diagnostic capabilities,
a less invasive and more relaxed experience for the patient, and the ability to
do smaller and more exact intermediations.
Robots surgery is
adopted by surgeons to treat myriads of medical problems such as prostate
surgery, hysterectomies, the removal of fibroids, joint replacements,
open-heart surgery and kidney surgeries. They can be used along with MRIs to
provide organ biopsies. Since the surgeon can see pictures of the patient and
control the robot through a computer, he/she can perform surgery in safe medical
location other than surgical room in hospital. In other words, if patient is at
distant location, surgeon can use robot surgery to cure the diseases if
urgently required.
Robotic surgery is analogous to laparoscopic surgery. It
can be performed through smaller cuts than open surgery. The small, precise
movements that are possible with this type of surgery give it some advantages
over standard endoscopic practices.
Robotic surgery may take time to complete the surgical
procedure because surgeon has to establish the robot. Many hospitals may not
have access to this method.
Robotic surgeries are used for different procedures such
as:
·
Coronary artery bypass
·
Cutting away cancer tissue from sensitive
parts of the body such as blood vessels, nerves, or important body organs
·
Gallbladder removal
·
Hip replacement
·
Hysterectomy
·
Kidney removal
·
Kidney transplant
·
Mitral valve repair
·
Pyeloplasty (surgery to correct ureteropelvic
junction obstruction)
·
Pyloroplasty
·
Radical prostatectomy
·
Radical cystectomy
·
Tubal ligation
Robotic surgery is a new medical concept to perform
surgery and is in its embryonic stage. Surgeons choose robot surgical method
for smaller surgical procedures.
