How fear of darkness develop in children
Fear of the dark begins in childhood. It is named as Nyctophobia
which is derived from Greek ‘Nyctus ‘meaning night or darkness and Phobos which
means intense fear. Kids are vulnerable to fear of darkness as their brain
perceives appalling images in darkness. This fear is also referred as Achluophobia.
Major
reasons of developing fear of darkness:
According to psychologists, Nyctophobia usually instigates
from a shocking experience in the past. In childhood, sometimes parents punish
a child for his unwanted act and left in dark room. These situations trigger Nyctophobia.
Siblings and friends are also responsible for imparting the fear of darkness.
It
is established fact that child’s mind is very sensitive. If he/she may exposed
to movie, TV shows and fiction that portray horror, blood, gore, ghosts and
other ghostly activities in dark environment, it leads to irrational in his psyche.
Other factors such as domestic violence, sexual abuse in
childhood especially at night, accidents and other upsetting or traumatic
events can also make child scared and apprehensive.
In majority of cases, fear of darkness disappear as the
child reaches to the age of teens or youth. But in typical cases, the
Achluophobia can continue into adulthood and cause of worry.
Symptoms
of fear of darkness:
In early childhood, children start thumb sucking, or bed
wetting due to their fear of darkness.
Children or adult who suffer from fear of darkness have
disturbed sleep and show following physical symptoms:

Aches and pains
2.
Rapid shallow breathing
3.
Heart palpitations
4.
trembling
5.
Chest pains or feeling like choking
6.
Nausea and other gastrointestinal pain
7.
Crying, shattering
8.
Reduced appetite or conversely overeating
People may exhibit some
psychological symptoms due to fear of darkness such as:
-Thoughts of death.
-Fear
of being attacked by ‘ghosts, and monsters
-Refusing
to sleep alone.
-Feeling
dread
Nyctophobia or fear
of darkness can be threatening when continued for a long time period. If
symptoms have been persistent for more than six months, then person must see
the psychologist to know the root causes and proper treatment.
Nyctophobia can be treated
through applying combination of psychological therapies and medicines such as Exposure
therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
It is observed in
people that fear of darkness have always been related with dreaded thoughts.
Kids are greatly affected with this irrational fear.
