Career in jewellery designing in India is a profitable career options for aspiring young designers. Jewellery designing is an art of designing and making jewellery, stone cutting, engraving and polishing etc.  India is the biggest consumer of gold in the world. Jewellery designing industry in India has been described as the fastest & ever growing industry. For jewellery designing, there are various institutes all over India which provide diploma courses after completing graduation in any stream. Many institutes offer short-term courses after completing X or XII standards.



Various types of courses would give essential information on color coding schemes, polishing & finishing, drawing techniques & ornament making and designing etc. The course duration may vary from 3 months to 3 years. Jewellery designing Institutes are now using computerized program like jewel cad, AutoCAD, Auto cam, etc. skills and experience is more important than qualifications. Jewellery designers could complete courses in various relevant subjects, for example: jewellery design, designed metalwork and jewellery, jewellery and metal design, 3D design: metals. If candidate can show talent in design skills and ideas, he may be able to develop a career in jewellery design without a qualification. There is good career in jewellery designing. As a jewellery designer, one can develop skills and keep up to date with new trends and techniques by doing part-time courses in specialist areas of the work. He can get details of these from the Jewellery and Allied Trades Training Council. If he is employed by a company they may provide in-house training. He can do a postgraduate course, such as an MA in Silver smithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts. Jewellery designers plan the style and pattern of jewellery, silverware and other decorative metalwork products.

Jewellery designers prepare sketches - by hand or on the computer - to conceptualize the design. After consulting with the customer or the manufacturing team, designers fashion detail drawings, a structural model, computer simulations, or a full-scale prototype. Computer models allow superior effortlessness and flexibility in exploring a number of design alternatives, thus reducing design costs and cutting the time it takes to deliver a product to market. Designs are created on regular or floral patterns and then generate forms by connecting different structures together. The range of raw materials is exhaustive from economical and easily available stuff like paper, wood, terracotta, jute, to highly priced Swarovski crystals.


Designer can produce designs to meet the requirements of a client (known as a 'brief' or commission) or for general sale, produce designs which are then made by other staff, work as a self-employed designer, designing and making jewellery, use a variety of crafts to make jewellery, including, mounting, setting and polishing. There are no specific personality traits for jewellery designers. One can learn everything while getting trained. However, candidate needs a passion for the profession; otherwise there is no way one can learn. A sense of design is imperative. Precision and attention to detail are also equally important for a successful jeweller. One should be very creative, imaginative and technically sound. It's also important to have a working knowledge about manufacturing. One should be well-versed with the fashion industry on the international front too.

Goldsmith:  Goldsmith makes jewellery for oneself or for someone else. He has the ability to make any standard jewellery.

Fashion Jeweller:  A fashion Jeweller work area involves designing accessories and making jewellery for the fashion industry.

Jewellery Designer: Jewellery Designer work involves preparing sketches by hand or on the computer as per specifications of the customers. He uses computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) programmes to create designs.

Lapidary: Lapidary work involves cutting precious stones, making them shine and carving gem material in them.




As a trainee in jewellery designing, candidate can start with Rs.8, 000-Rs.10, 000 per month. In about a year, his salary would be Rs.20, 000-Rs.30, 000 per month. With an experience of around five years, one can earn about Rs.30, 000 –Rs.40, 000 per month.
